Treason! Heresy! Betrayal!

10 May 200811:05AMlife

Hey! This post is really old. You should take it with a grain of salt.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

ASUS, the maker of the deliciously awesome Eee PC, has decided that despite the fact that its original sold millions on units running Linux, it will be shipping Windows XP on the new ones. Not only will the XP version be more readily available, it will also be $50 _cheaper _than the Linux version, despite the fact that Linux and OpenOffice are free, and XP and Works are (definitely) not. Admittedly, the Linux version does have a larger flash ssd, but this was originally introduced so that they could equalise the licencing fee for Windows, so they could have the same price. Now that the Linux version is more expensive, I don't think I can afford it any more ($649 is a lot more than $479!). Plus I am p***ed off by the fact that they're snuggling up in bed with Microsoft and sucking the uniqueness out of what was an excellent little device.

I'm not impressed.

Eee-meter: [--POSTPONED--]Since I'm seriously considering boycotting it (or buying the old version of eBay, since I don't want to give my money to the bastards at ASUS)

Meanwhile, the Nokia N810 is looking really good right now...

PS: If any of the execs from ASUS who are reading (read: probably none) would like to regain my trust, here is what to do:

  1. Reduce the price of the Linux version to be in line with the Windows version(unlikely), or;

  2. Even better, make the Linux one less than the Windows one (more unlikely); or 3. Don't even bother with a Windows version (pretty much impossible)
