Book in a day

21 August 200802:16PMlife

Hey! This post is really old. You should take it with a grain of salt.

So today was book in a day day.

The task: To write an entire book in an entire day, more precisely, at least 4000 words in 12 hours. 8am to 8pm. Our team took a while to click, but once we did, it was impossible to stop us. We had a list of 3 characters (A scientist and an Egyptian Pharaoh, and a Chimpanzee), a setting (an underwater city), an issue (global warming) and 5 miscellaneous words (Underground, Heart, Nurse, Joy-ride and Sneeze). We managed to weave them into a rather interesting post-apocalyptic setting involving some Egyptian-esque people trapped in a gigantic pyramid shaped 'Habitat', and a scientist comes to plunder their advanced technology. Shenannigans ensue. The easiest bit by far was the writing, the hardest was the final hour, when we were all simultaneously munching pizzas, trying to figure out page numbering, scanning illustrations on an ancient scanner, and generally panicking. We ended up finishing though, and I have to say, it was awesome. Really. A lot of fun, I'd do it again in a second (but maybe not tomorrow, I'm stuffed!)

The entire event is organised to raise money and create a book (duh!) for various children's hospitals, such as Princess Margaret Hospital for Children here in Perth. See the official site for details, and check back here to find out how much money we raised.

Live blogging from the event itself is on the school ATP blog (along with excerpts, etc), so check that out for a more comprehensive look.

Finally, here's a link to our completed 'book'. It's a bit rough, but it's a good story. You'll enjoy it. I swear. :D Word (.doc, fast D/L) HTML (web, may be slow, broken formatting)

Well, I'm tired as anything and my brain hurts too much to do any more writing, so that's about it for now.
