Anzac Day

25 April 200904:34AMintrospection

Hey! This post is really old. You should take it with a grain of salt.

There's a few things I've noticed about Anzac day. Of all the national holidays you see around the world, Anzac day has got to be the strangest. America celebrates their independance, France celebrates the downfall of a fascist king, but Australia comemmorates a total military defeat. It's a bit weird.

The other thing is, sure we have a few other holidays here, but Anzac day is the only one that seems totally sacred. At our school Anzac service, everyone was totally silent through almost the whole thing. It's surrounded by an almost religious reverence, which I guess has a lot to do with all the poetry and stuff they traditonally read about sacrifice and dead soldiers and Australian way of life. I think all of this is really pretty significant, I just can't put my finger on why.

Anyway, enjoy your public holiday everyone. Nice day for it too.
