Yet another raving District 9 review...

21 August 200902:45PMreview

Hey! This post is really old. You should take it with a grain of salt.

District 9... was pretty much the best movie I've seen all year. Star Trek is definitely a close second but this... it just blew me away.

Specific awesomes: The efffects were pretty much perfect. The aliens looked real. Really real. I know in a few years time when SFX tech has moved on they'll look tacky but... wow. The style of the aliens really was perfect. Their bodies were all insecty and crustaceany but fortunately they didn't pull the whole 'bio-ship' 'bio-tech' 'organic weapons' tone. The tech is industrial and badass looking. Especially the flying saucer... the thought of that thing just hanging there for 20 years or however long is just a brilliant idea. In fact, the whole premise was just awesome.

And, possibly the best bit, it wasn't just explosions and effects. There was depth. My lit student side was picking apart the characters and analysing the apartheid metaphors the whole way through. Just the way the film subtly turns your response from sympathising with the humans and finding the aliens disgusting to sympathising with the aliens and finding the humans disgusting... it's incredibly well written and incredibly well shot. Soundtrack was just plain awesome, sounded like one of those classic sci-fi soundtracks without sounding cliched.

One quirk- it was produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Neill Blomkamp - who were originally going to do the now-cancelled Halo movie. And I think they may have recycled some props they'd already had made, 'cause some of the armour looks Spartan-y, and the guns could easily be repainted Battle Rifles. Or maybe that was just me.

Anyway, as much as I enjoy a massive action explosion flick, this shows how Sci-fi can be. Really thoughtful, brilliantly made, and thoroughly enjoyable at the same time. Awesome, awesome movie.
